First of all sorry for putting this review so late, I would like to thank the host family here. Vineet and Bhavna were the perfect hosts, the rooms are cosy with enough space and basic amenities..i wasn't expecting too much on the hills anyways. The view from the homestay was just breathtaking. The best part about this place is the host and the location. This homestay is right below KMVN Mukteshwar guesthouse so not very difficult to locate yet away from hussel bustle. A special mention for the food we were getting served their, thanks Bhavna for providing us exactly the kind of home-cooked food we were looking for during our long stay. Nestled at an altitude of 7500 ft, Mukhteshwar has a long tryst with the British and still boasts of its colonial past. The IVRI (Indian Veteinary Research Institute), setup in 1893 for veterinary experiments, retains its buildings (dated early 20th century), flavor and feel. With a prior permission from IVRI – Bareilly, one can stroll through the campus to view the animals, birds and butterflies. With flora and fauna, both at its diverse best, the place is a heaven for those in love with nature. Due to the restrictions, the place has been able to maintain its splendid beauty with sustainable tourism. Mukteshwar, once destination only for few, is now fast gaining popularity in the tourism map. For those who love to be on the move, there are many other options to spend time. A famous shiv mandir at the end of the town and very near from our homestay is a just a few steps into the forests. One can chat with a ‘baba’ who resides in the snow covered winters in a stone cave. For the brave hearts, a climb up the ‘chauli ki jali” would find a bird’s eye view of the entire valley. Legend has it that during the old days when travelers could not bear with the atrocities of harsh weather and tough treks, they would jump down from here. With today’s well laid network of roads and modern facilities, this is surely not needed. I was travelling with a friend this time, We trekked through the IVRI jungle which takes you to nearby Sitla & Almora towns. Along this route one can feel the rawness and beauty of nature. There are very few places left so easily accessible and yet so untouched by human intervention as this part of the mountains. The thick deodar forests are also home to bears, leopards and snakes. If you are lucky (or unlucky) you could sight some. The daytime journey though is invariably always safe. Their are enough day hikes around some villages, rock climbing, rapling and other adventure activities if you are planning to stay here for longer. You can always explore some nearby hillstations like Nainital, Bhimtal, Sattal which are about two hours of easy drive away and can be visited in the same day. The place is also a heaven for bird watching. Himalayan Bulbuls, Bushchats, Barbets, Oriental white-eye, Black-headed Jay, White-throated laughing thrush are among the easily spotted birds. During my stay I was woken up from my slumber by a chirping bird almost everyday. First day after I reached their from half open eye, I saw a colorful blue Eurasian Jay perched in my balcony. Beyond that the skyline bore a deep orange color.. Far from the maddening crowd, this little Adobe made my stay so pleasurable with homely feeling and excellent service. Though Mukhteshwar is an excellent getaway for summers, it has a different flavor across seasons. Since I stayed during the monsoons which i enjoyed from the balcony hearing the pitter and patter of the rains on the roof and sipping hot Chai & Pakoras. Winters are an opportunity to enjoy white shivering moments sitting in front of fire places and basking in sunny days. For those with culinary lore, once can request local Kumaoni cuisine. The food is mostly simple but amazingly appealing to the palate. A walk to the nearby village homes gives an insight into the lives of paharis. Though Mukhteshwar offers a wide variety of activities for those with adventure and fun on their wish list, for the ‘slow travelers’, it offers more. But if your idea of a vacation is simply to lay back or to satisfy your literary glands or to simply listen to your favorite music or to just be in sync with the nature, there is no better place than this. One can spend hours basking in the bright sunny days. A stroll to the nearby villages is a great way to spend evenings and also to get to see the lives and ways of simple hill people. The calmness of the place with sounds of nature buzzing all around, one feels rejuvenated and refreshed. Every time I go to Mukhteshwar, I realize doing nothing is an art by itself. It’s almost an alien concept in our daily hectic lives which needs to be practiced when one is in the lap of the Himalayas. Once mastered, it’s the best way to enjoy this serene place. An experience you would want to have more of and a place you will surely return to. How to reach: 8 hours journey by road from Delhi. Nearest railhead is 65km away at Kathgodham which is well linked to Delhi. Nearest airport is at Pantnagar.
