The hotel is in the old shipping building near the railway station and has very quirky architecture, there is an old fashioned lift (in keeping with the building) and lots of tiny corridors, which can be quite confusing. On my arrival, I found the reception staff to be a little rude. I arrived at about 11:00 am and was told in quite a rude manner that I would not be able to check in until 3:00pm (I have no issue with this whatsoever as it is the usual check in time for any hotel). I returned and was checked in, Dimitri the porter who helped me with my case was very friendly and helpful. The rooms are decorated in keeping with the building so, consequently, are very dark. The bed in my room was very uncomfortable and I think the mattress badly needed replacing. The bathroom had a shower over the bath and the bath had very high sides, I don't have any issues with my mobility and I found it quite difficult to get into the shower, so I can imagine it would not be great if you have any mobility issues. Otherwise the room was OK but not what I would expect from a 5 star hotel. I went to the bar to have dinner. Again, the decor is very dark, but it was nice. The waiter who served me (unfortunately I cannot remember his name) was lovely and gave me excellent recommendations from the menu and the food was amazing. I had to check out at 06:00 to catch a train to the airport for my flight. I got downstairs to find no-one at the reception desk to check me out. I waited for a few minutes and no-one came. I was unable to wait any longer and had to leave my card key on the desk with a note telling them I needed to check out. Absolutely disgraceful for a 5 star hotel.

I do not recommend the Grand Hotel Amrath in Amsterdam

2/5

·

Ben H on May 21, 2024

I do not recommend the Grand Hotel Amrath in Amsterdam. A hotel is supposed to be comfortable place to wind down after a busy day, or even a place to hang out and relax while you enjoy what the hotel has to offer. This hotel is missing a lot of basic amenities and has serious issues with caring for the guests, and there are too many questionable practices or down-right bad things about the hotel. I'm not sure how this is considered a 5-star hotel. If you're feeling generous, the location and building itself might lend it a 4-star rating. Do not count on your experience with Grand Hotel Amrath being special or even necessarily positive. We would have moved to a different hotel if doing so wouldn't have been so inconvenient and most likely more expensive. Positives: 1) The location: This is a huge selling point for this hotel. The hotel is located a perfect distance from the train station, shops and restaurants, and historical areas of Amsterdam. 2) The building: The hotel is beautiful and clearly historic. I saw other reviewers dislike the maze-like layout of the hotel, but I thought that was charming and unique. The look is distinctly European and fun. A downside is that the hotel is clearly not wheelchair accessible. 3) The breakfast: The breakfast provided was fully loaded and complete, with lots of variety and quantity of food. There is a downside which I mention below. Negatives: 1) The room: We arrived a couple hours before check-in so we asked the reception staff if an early check-in was possible. They said they would try, but no promises since they still have to prepare the room. Understandable, so we decided to go grab some lunch and came back closer to the check-in time. Still the room was not ready, and by this point, we had been awake for almost 2 days and we were hot and exhausted. So we asked if they had any other rooms available, and they said the only way to get a room early is to pay an upgrade. One of the staff members showed us some rooms to choose from - our room that was "not ready" seemed to actually be ready but had a bad location and view, another room that was ready had a better location and view but was much more expensive per night, another room that was more expensive had a bad location and view, etc. Based on what we saw, there did not seem to be any rhyme or reason for what room would be considered an upgrade. Ultimately, the staff member said we should NOT pay for an upgrade and he had a room for us without needing an upgrade. He chatted with the front desk and they gave us a better room that did not require an upgrade. So it brought up several questions. Why were we waiting for our room to be ready, when they already had rooms that were ready? Why did they say they required an upgrade to get a room early, but then were able to provide the same kind of room without an upgrade? Why were they trying to get an upgrade just to potentially give us a worse room? It seemed very shady, like they were trying to bully us into paying for an upgraded room that really wasn't an upgrade. Seems like a dishonest business practice. 2) The bed: Our bed was not ready when we were given a room. It was missing sheets, I suppose we were expected to lay on a mattress without a sheet. Underneath us was a mattress pad that was covered with fabric pills - the hard balls of lint/fabric were sticking thru and poking us all night. We tried to remove the mattress pad, but the mattress underneath was actually two small mattresses put together so it was not workable either. Because we were exhausted from travelling, we thought we would deal with it the next day - we probably should have made bigger deal of this the first day. We woke up quite early (around 5:00am) because we were very uncomfortable, and we just decided to get ready and go out for the day. We talked to an overnight staff member about the state of the mattress and mattress pad. The overnight staff member agreed it was ridiculous and he had never seen this before, took photos, and said he would make sure it was remedied before we returned later that day. We asked if they could replace the mattress pad since it was obviously in such bad quality. Needless to say, they did not replace the mattress pad, but they did at least double-up on the sheets. 3) The temperature: The room was hot. Because of the historic nature of the building, the staff said they cannot install AC in the building. This means the room was hot, stuffy, and uncomfortable the entire time. The room supposedly had a climate control system, but there was no air flow that we could feel. I don't think we slept very well because of the temperature. The window could also only be opened a couple inches. There needs to be some sort of compromise - if you cannot install AC, at least allow people to open the windows, otherwise it is just not relaxing or comfortable in the room. We were provided a standing fan, but it was just moving warm air. 4) The minibar: The minibar in the room is free, it contains water and soda in glass bottles. I mention glass bottles because you need a bottle opener in order to open the drinks. Our room did not have a bottle opener. We asked multiple staff members over several days if they could please provide a bottle opener for us. For some reason, we were never given a bottle opener even after many requests and people saying they'd deliver one to the room. We eventually found a staff member early in the morning (around 2:00am) who let us borrow his own personal bottle opener. The overnight staff apparently does not have access to all areas like the bar after it is closed, which just seems strange, so they can't "easily" fix an issue like this. For an unknown reason, though, the cleaning crew took that bottle opener and did not replace it, and so we were left again without a bottle opener. The second-to-last day of our trip, we had to ask the staff to take a bottle opener from an unused room. A free minibar does not count as an amenity if you cannot use it. The inability to correct a simple issue seems weird. 5) The food: I mentioned above the breakfast is great; however, it is not free for all guests, only guests with an upgraded room. At the price people are paying, breakfast should be included for all guests, it seems crazy to exclude certain rooms. Drinks are available at the bar and there is limited room service, but the prices are exorbitant. You can walk 5 minutes down the road and find good food and drinks for much cheaper. It's almost as if the hotel does not want you to utilize room service, they do not make it appealing. 6) The staff: The staff seemed to not care about the complaints of the guests. We had overheard many people complaining to the reception, who seemed uninterested and unwilling to resolve any situation. They seemed to give off the vibe that the guests were doing them a favor by staying at the hotel, instead of the other way around. I mentioned a couple personal experiences above, but based on the reviews, this is a common sentiment. Only a couple staff members seemed to care - the one who helped us get a good room and the one who let us borrow his bottle opener (which unfortunately got taken by the cleaning crew).

Magical hotel

We had dinner here so cannot comment on the rooms but this is an architectural wonder. Reviews that criticize the darkness or “needing a facelift” might not understand that it is an art nouveau piece of magic, and is likely over 100 years old. Been all over the world and in awe of the design, stained glass, original furniture, etc. The staff could not have been lovelier and our dinner was outstanding. We stayed across the street at the Hilton which is of course lighter and newer. A hotel we can see any day, anywhere. We both regret we hadn’t known about the Amrath instead.

Traveller Beware!! Lift shaft bedrooms - ROOM 601

·

Traveller Beware!! Stayed here May 2024, beautiful interior to the hotel and looks very grand on exterior. Downside to Grand Hotel Amrath Amsterdam was when we checked in. According to a member of staff we should have been made aware at check-in that we were being put into a room with the lift shaft in it, our bed was next to one of the lift shaft walls, there were two lift shaft walls. ROOM 601. It was very noisy cranking waking us up. We were told the hotel was busy, so didn't ask to be moved room as only there for 2 nights. The hotel looked very empty, the restaurant was empty, bar area was quiet but ate out in the city. In dealing with this the hotel - difficult regarding this, saying they were very busy! We cannot agree. The windows were sealed in our room unable to gain fresh air.
