A good hotel in the suburbs but with a good Metro connection

I believe that if one is visiting a city with a good metro/underground system, then there is no need to stay in the centre of the city: choose a good hotel near a metro stop and one is set. Thus the Rubens hotel meets those criteria, being a good hotel and almost equidistant from the Gambara and De Angeli stops (they're on the same line). Breakfast was excellent with a good choice of foods available. One day we even had smoked salmon, replacing cold turkey slices. The coffee machine is probably very good if one drinks coffee, but we are tea drinkers, and the hot water could have been hotter. The room (114) was functional, good but not excellent. There is no full size mirror, no clothes drawers and the height of the bath tub seems excessive. The windows block any noise coming from outside. The area in which the hotel is situated is not the most upmarket but it is sufficient. As I noted previously, there is good metro service (the Duomo is eight stops away with no need to change; the central train station is a bit further away with one stop). Near the hotel is a Carrefour market where one can buy food at a reasonable price; they also have a cafe. There is an upmarket Osteria nearby (Osteria dei Malnat) opposite a good pizza restaurant (Billy's place). There are a few bars on the way to Carrefour, but I didn't go into any of them (check that they have tavolo calda - hot dishes). There is also a take-away kebab place. I can definitely recommend this hotel.

Nice place, friendly staff, clean room, recommended breakfast, good amenities, good location, close to metro station. Many restaurants around. Try to choose a room with opposit street view because it might be noisy. Con. Quite expensive for a low season period.

Convenient stay, 200m to Metro and to public parking €6/24h rate: great included breakfast in terrace with beautiful sightseeing and fancy decoration. Big bathroom, closet to leave luggage and clothes, good beds and linings besides interesting location by side of Ganbara Metro, 8 stations or 6 min to Duomo and historic center.

Failed football trip

I booked this hotel as a Christmas gift in order to go and watch an Inter Milan fixture and paid the non-refundable amount which I fully accept is my own responsibility and not the hotels fault. However, the date of the football fixture was changed 4 days before Christmas from January to February. I still wanted to stay at the hotel and although the price of the stay for the rearranged dates had increased I was willing to pay the difference. Despite the best efforts of hotels.com, sadly there was no understanding or flexibility on the part of the hotel who refused to change my booking. As stated, I know the fault lies with me for the non-refundable booking but just hoped the hotel might have been a little more understanding of the situation seeing as it wasn’t me that moved the fixture. Hopefully this review acts as a warning just for anybody else looking to book a football trip to the San Siro to pay the extra to be able to get a refund.

We stayed at the Hotel Rubens for two weeks during October. For such a long stay we'd contemplated renting an apartment but decided on a hotel to enjoy the resource of hotel staff who could advise us regarding transportation issues etc. Also, this hotel is Sabbath friendly. We were very happy with our decision. All staff members we encountered, whether at reception, dining room or housekeeping, were friendly, polite and helpful. Also there were usually several staff members on reception, which makes a nice change from those places where guests have to queue for a single member of staff. Our request for a quiet room was granted. Our standard room was pleasant, not big, but big enough. Bed was comfortable, shower was hot with good water pressure (if a little confusing at first with all the options). There were well thought out details eg while not a lot of wardrobe space there were two suitcase stands, so ample for most stays; good lighting options; lots of power points. Good free wifi. Well-appointed breakfast room on top floor with a good assortment of food including cereals, pastries, fresh fruit, eggs and other cooked food, yoghurt and fresh juices. The hotel is about five minutes' walk from Gambara metro station. We did several day trips by train, so would catch the metro to Duomo, then change for Milano Centrale. Easy. Close to shopping precincts including dining and supermarkets. Cash machine around the corner. Ten to 15 minutes' walk to synagogues and kosher restaurants.
